I was able to use a Japanese SIM card as well.
It seems that only pre-installed APN settings can be used.
The SoftBank Direct SIM card was recognized as soon as I inserted the SIM, and the setup was completed in about a minute.
The SIM cards from Rakuten and MyNeeo (SoftBank) were not recognized, so there must be no APN included.
