Straight stitch group

This stitch needs no introduction or explanation: the photographs show perfectly how to start out and work the Straight stitch.

Ribbon stitch group

Usually, when Ribbon stitch is featured in instructions, it does not matter which kind you work. I would rather not treat the mallet shape as a separate stitch, but as a Centre ribbon stitch variation. Bear in mind that if no specification is given in the instructions for the mallet shape, Ribbon stitches are normally expected to be pointed.

Daisy Stitch Group

Lazy daisy stitch (classical)

Work a loop, then bring your needle up through the fabric inside the loop and work a short Straight stitch to secure the loop in place. Play around, varying the length of the loop and stitch to create different shapes. Changing the ribbon size is also fun.

Knots

Including: French knot
This is a popular and well-known stitch. It can have one, two or three wraps round the needle). Follow the photographs to master it. Play around with ribbon size and the number of loops to create different sizes of French knot/

Thread Embroidery

Including: Open fishbone stitch
This stitch is useful if for example you want to embroider openwork translucent lacy leaves for the background. Start with a Straight stitch going along the leaf vein from the tip of the leaf. Go on working, as shown in the diagrams, gradually coming down along the central vein of the leaf until all the leaf is stitched.

New Techniques: Hemisphere Technique

This method works for stitching spherical elements like berries, apples, oranges or round flower buds.
