What is the CAN FD protocol
As the number of automotive ECUs continues to increase, the number of messages transmitted on the bus is also increasing. In the traditional CAN network, each frame of the message can only carry 8 bytes of data, and the CAN bus can only support a maximum transmission rate of 1Mb/s. In order to increase the utilization of the CAN bus, the CAN FD (Flexible Data-rate) standard was introduced based on CAN.
Compared with traditional CAN, CAN FD supports a higher transmission rate and a variable speed function, that is, a lower transmission rate is used for bus arbitration in the arbitration segment. After winning the arbitration, the data in the data segment is transmitted at a high rate, supporting a maximum transmission rate of 8Mb/s. The data field length of CAN FD has also been expanded, and a maximum of 64 bytes can be transmitted at a time.
